William Patterson | multimedia journalist & news producer
About me
I’m William Patterson, a journalist and news producer working for Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Hong Kong. With a background in magazine writing, I have pivoted into multimedia work—working primarily with video in my current role.
Marginalized people, environment and history are persistent areas covered by my professional and personal storytelling. I aim to bring these human elements into stories about wider political and social issues.
Beyond Hong Kong, my AFP work experience spans two US presidential elections, month-long stints at the Middle East regional bureau and on-the-ground coverage of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Prior to joining AFP, I was a student journalist and freelancer in Hong Kong—covering the height of the 2019 pro-democracy protests and opening days of the Covid-19 pandemic.
I encourage fellow media workers and students to get in touch. I’m always happy to share my experiences as a newswire journalist.
