William Patterson | journalist & producer

About me

I’m William Patterson, a journalist and producer working for Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Hong Kong. With a background in magazine writing and over five years at an international news agency, my experience spans regional Asia-Pacific news coverage alongside local Hong Kong stories.

Marginalised communities, environment and history are common themes across my feature writing—and Hong Kong is rife with these stories. This website showcases some of my favourite reporting over the years.

When not working on the agency’s video desk or putting together a feature, I can be found at Hong Kong’s press conferences and breaking news scenes.

Beyond Hong Kong, my AFP work includes coverage of two US presidential elections, stints at the agency’s Middle East bureau, reporting on Chinese sporting events and filming Vietnamese military celebrations.

Prior to joining AFP, I was an editorial assistant at Omaha Magazine and then a freelancer—covering the height of the Hong Kong’s 2019 protests and opening days of the Covid-19 pandemic.
